And so, who are we?
The Open Temple is an emerging community in Venice, CA for the Jew-ishly curious and those who love us. Our ritual experiences and happenings are rooted in wonder and openness. Our mission is to inspire individuals and families towards a life of Jewish curiosity, creativity and critical thought and to re-enchant and reinvigorate our human potential towards more meaningful, connected and purposeful lives as we revitalize Jewish practice in surprising and creative ways for the 21st Century seeker to transform ourselves and the world around us.
Artists. Lawyers. Industry professionals. Actors. Grad students. Professors. The Open Temple is an experimental spiritual community asking: What happens when tradition is given the license to bend according to our curiosities — unself-consciously and freely? What began in 2010 when four families sought a personalized Torah education for their children, with consideration for their needs as intermarried families from an international background, and a sense of fun, continues to grow beyond a creative and innovative “Third Place” community. The Open Temple House opened in Fall, 2016 (5777) as a center for Creative Jewish Spirituality serving musicians, performers, and the spiritually creative in Venice, CA.
“Sing unto God a new song.”
If God is already tired, as suggests the Psalm, of hearing the old song, all the more so will ordinary mortals be.
