Open Temple

Electric Starfish Project

Open Temple’s Electric Starfish Project is a collective of individuals who circle around a houseless individual and advocate for them through the labyrinthine system of social services. We find inspiration in this essay from American anthropologist Loren Eiseley entitled “The Star Thrower.”

Germaine and Chris

In March 2021, we met Germaine who was living in a homeless shelter at the Oakwood Rec Center in Venice and learned about how she and her son Chris became unhoused. Our hearts turned to find a solution for them.

By late April, Germaine received the key to her new apartment in Santa Monica and sent this text:

“I’m surfing channels and what’s on…Yentl. You are a blessing to us. Thanks so much. Now I can rest my mind. Signed lease, got keys. Looking for stuff to make it home now…I appreciate all the support. Thank you Open Temple.”

Let’s help Germaine and Chris build a home for themselves through the generosity of Offerings from our community. Visit our Amazon Wish List to gift them with the household items they need.

“Sing unto God a new song.” -Psalm 96

If God is already tired, as suggests the Psalm, of hearing the old song, all the more so will ordinary mortals be. -Alcalay (20th c. Jewish lexicographer)
