Many communities suggest that they are new spins on tradition filled with Cool Jewish ideas. Open Temple really is. Our Cool Jewish approach is fun, contemporary and feels good. Rooted in Venice, CA, right behind Abbot Kinney Blvd, which GQ Magazine tomed “The Coolest Block in America” is arugably the coolest Jewish commnity in America. From Goat Yoga Yom Kippur to Havdalah Soundbaths, Selichot at a Korean Spa to a Jew Truck rolling on the Shabbos, Open Temple epitomizes and sets a new standard for those who say they are “Cool Jewish.” Open Temple offers a brand of Cool Jewish Judaism, and the seekers who attend our services sense that something special is happening here.

Many communities express contemporary Jewish expressions of Jewish life; however, Open Temple embodies what is cool. Our services, in a black box theatre, incorporate concepts of a cool Jewish life – we are as open to expressions through digital media as we are meditation. Our school is a cool Jewish approach to Hebrew school – our students study Judaism through the modern lens of the arts. Our Cool Jewish approach engages students in modern cool Jewish ideas that stem from the ancient and rabbinic traditions and find their way into our lives through dance, theatre, music, art, weaving and more expressions of Cool Judaism and the arts.

Our women’s groups are a cool Jewish take on traditional Jewish ideas. Women gather once a month Rosh Hodesh group where women can explore their Jewish identity through community, creativity, ritual or/and a shared meal. The counterpart to this cool Jewish spin on female community is our men’s group, which meets at Open Temple house monthly and encourages our community of men to find their Jewish voices outside of what tradition has told men to be. Our band converts traditional Jewish songs into new, cool Jewish expressions, and we are known to “mash up” traditional Jewish music and convert them into cool Jewish classics through reworking them into Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Madonna, Motown and more.

This cool Jewish expression of Judaism invites the participant into a form of cool Jewish spirituality that is fresh, fun and uniquely modern in its application of cool Jewish ideas and thought for a cool Jewish appeal. Cool Judaism isn’t just an idea – it is a by-product of the people who attend Open Temple – cool, young or eternally young, and cool Jews from all walks of life. What distinguishes Open Temple from other communities is that we are founded on the values of creativity, love and truth, which together encourage us to look at Judaism through these lenses.

Cool Judaism comes from individuals coming together to say “this matters, and Judaism has relevance in the 21st Century.” Our approach also possesses many new takes on tradition; the result is a fresh and cool Jewish look at the world around us. Open Temple’s application of cool Jewish ideas creates a cool Jewish experience that is contemporary, fun, and accessible for all who identify as a Cool Jewish Jew.
